On Our Way to Glory – Things to Do

Good News! As believers, you and I are on our way to glory. The path we’re on right now may not seem like a glory path. But it is. That’s what believing is all about. Choosing to believe the truth of God’s Word, regardless of what life throws at us.

“God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.” Hebrews 2:10 NLT

According to Romans 8:28-30, God doesn’t only allow every circumstance in our lives. He ordains them for His purpose. It’s difficult to fathom, isn’t it? But God actually molds everything in our messy lives together to work for our good and His glory.

God’s ultimate purpose is to transform us into the likeness of His Son. And that’s how God takes us to glory. He introduces us to Jesus and then works everything in our lives to make us more like him. And it all starts when we’re made right with God.

“And having chosen (us), he called (us) to come to him. And having called (us), he gave (us) right standing with himself. And having given (us) right standing he gave (us) his glory.”

It’s a wonder God doesn’t whisk us home to glory the moment we receive eternal life through His Son. But He doesn’t do this. Perhaps He leaves us here because we have things to do and people to see. It’s called sanctification and multiplication.

Sanctification is like preparing for a royal banquet. How would we feel if we showed up grubby and unkempt? I Peter 4:7-11 tells us how to prepare for heaven:

  • Be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.
  • Love deeply for love covers a multitude of sins.
  • Cheerfully share your home with others.
  • Use your God-given spiritual gifts to serve one another with all the strength and energy God supplies.
  • “Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.” (v. 11)

What are some specific things God has given you to do on the way to glory?

(Next week, we’ll talk about the “people to see” aspect of the glory path.)
