It’s Not About YOU! or, Is It?

“It’s not about you!” You’ve either heard it, said it or would like to have said it. We’ve all been around someone who acts as if he/she is the most important person in the room. Perhaps the universe.

The truth is we’re all born with the need for attention, as well as a way to get it. Our first aggressive act out of the womb is to scream. Then the needy infant approaches two, and a healthy cry for attention becomes a demanding spirit. Without a different kind of attention from the parents, the child can become arrogant and unmanageable.

However, kids aren’t the only ones who need to understand the world doesn’t revolve around them. What happens when we adults focus on ourselves more than God and others? We become self-serving and/or overly-needy people. As a result, we may become a nuisance or a burden to others.

In our own eyes, it should never be about us. But what about God’s viewpoint? What about you? Do you sometimes wonder how God sizes you up? Does He breathe a weary sigh when you make the same inane mistake again and again? Does He shake His holy head in disgust when you ignore His pull on your heart? Do you think He sometimes wishes He could give up and send a flood to get rid of us all? On second thought, He promised not to do that again, didn’t He?

The truth is God created us to have fellowship with Him. But our sinful nature makes that impossible. For some reason, God still loves us, regardless of our past mistakes, religious persuasion, or present circumstances. So much so that He paid a great price to prove it.

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.” John 3:16-18 The Message (italics added for emphasis)

Thankfully for us, the demonstration of His love and forgiveness didn’t stop at the cross. After He redeems our souls, the sacrificial lamb becomes heaven’s hound in pursuit of our hearts.

God want us to know Him experientially. This is why He’ll never settle for an hour on Sunday relationship. He loves us too much for that. So He continues to seek after our hearts ‘til He gets our full attention. And then He’ll do everything it takes to keep us close to Him.

The question is how will we respond? Leave a comment and share how God has been the hound of heaven in your life.

  1. I love the dog metaphors, Liz! You’ve made me smile and THINK! I wonder if the Holy Spirit feels like a border collie – constantly circling me and keeping me with the herd. I hear His distinctive “bark,” reminding me of His truth and calling me to the right path. How fun is that?

But I have always loved that name for God: The Hound of Heaven. C.S. Lewis – what a great thinker!
