Veal Spezzato – A New Twist on an Old Word

Here’s another Italian recipe from Pauline, neighbor of my mother-in-law. She cooked it for us and it was delicious!  You can eat it on a roll or pasta. I can’t tell you the best place to find the veal. She says she bought it at BJ’s for a good price.  Enjoy!

  Veal Spezzato

  • 4-5 lbs. veal cubes, cut into small pieces
  • 2 large onions, diced
  • 3/4 large green pepper, diced
  • 1 lb. mushrooms, diced
  • 1 large can tomatoes (crushed or pureed)
  • 1 tsp. basil
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano
  • l tsp. salt
  • pepper
  • 1 clove of garlic (slivered)

Brown veal well in large fry pan until liquid evaporates. Remove from pan. Cook vegetables in pan just until soft. Add meat and tomatoes. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
